The teacher who was seen on camera abusing a child in a numeracy class has been suspended from Christ Mitots School in Ikorodu, Lagos.
A video of a primary school teacher brutally slapping a youngster for failing a numeracy lesson has previously gone viral on social media. Following public outcry, the female tutor at Christ Mitots School in the Lagos district of Ikorodu was taken into custody. The school administration voiced its concerns about the viral video in a statement in response to the incident. The teacher’s behaviour was deemed “unacceptable and contrary to the values and principles of our school” by the administration. It stated that the instructor has been placed on indefinite leave pending the conclusion of the investigation
“We are aware of a deeply troubling incident involving one of our teachers and a student, which has been circulating on social media,” the school said in part of its statement. “In the video, a teacher is shown physically disciplining a kid in a way that is totally inappropriate and goes against our school’s ideals. “We are appalled by this occurrence as an organisation that is steadfastly dedicated to promoting a culture of dignity, respect, and care, and we want to be clear that such behaviour will not be accepted.
“In response, the teacher involved has been suspended indefinitely while a thorough investigation is conducted.”Our zero-tolerance policy for misbehaviour and our duty to protect the safety and wellbeing of every child in our care are reflected in this prompt and forceful action.We offer the student and their family our deepest apologies. We have personally contacted them to apologise, offer our assistance, and make sure their needs are met during this difficult time.
“We are taking decisive action to make sure that this kind of behaviour never happens again in the wake of this tragedy. In order to strengthen child safety procedures, promote constructive disciplinary methods, and foster more empathy in interactions with children, we will be holding required training sessions for educators.In order to promote the timely reporting of inappropriate activity, we have also implemented a confidential whistleblower mechanism. “We ask for the public’s patience and understanding as we work to address this matter responsibly and comprehensively.”
